Why you should care about your Price-Comfort!

Your Price-Comfort shows you how much energy you consume to heat your home. The lower it is, the more you benefit from optimal comfort at a lower cost.

It is likely that reducing your Price-Comfort will be rewarded with green euros in what we hope will be the near future. Let's send this signal to policy makers!

What is the Price-Comfort indicator?

The Price-Comfort shows you the amount of energy you need, expressed in kWh, to increase the indoor temperature of your home by one degree compared to the outdoor temperature. This difference between the outdoor and indoor temperatures, combined with your heating habits, determines your energy consumption. Your Price-Comfort is calculated based on your past energy bills

This figure is actually a constant: every time you increase the indoor temperature by one degree, you increase your energy consumption by the value of your Price-Comfort. If it is zero degrees outside and you want an indoor temperature of 18 degrees, you multiply your Price-Comfort by 18 to estimate your energy consumption for that day.

The Price-Comfort is a constant that depends on the quality of your home's insulation and heating system, BUT ALSO, importantly, on your heating habits. So it doesn't just depend on technical data, but also on you!

Knowing my carbon footprint

Your Price-Comfort is similar in a way to your Body Masse Index!

Everyone is familiar with the concept of body mass index (BMI), which is calculated based on your height and weight (your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres). This is a unique value belonging to you.

The Price-Comfort is similar to your BMI in that it characterises you in your home. For the same house, different households will have different Price-Comfort, just as different people of the same height have different weights. Your Price-Comfort is therefore a unique value associated with you in your home.

In the long run, once we all know our Price-Comfort, this could enable us to compare the quality of materials and behavior in different regions of the country and set thresholds for energy poverty or thermal obesity, as we do for BMI.

How can I reduce my Price-Comfort?

Once you have calculated your Price-Comfort based on your past energy bills, you have two options for reducing its value, i.e. paying less for energy while enjoying greater comfort.

Firstly, you can opt for a renovation programme for your home and heating equipment. You can tailor this comfort renovation programme to your budget by focusing solely on heating appliances or opting for a more ambitious programme that includes insulating the walls of your home.

Secondly, you can decide to optimise your heating habits. It's free! By lowering the temperature in bedrooms, for example, or in rooms where you are not present, you will reduce your energy bills without compromising on comfort, and at no cost!
